Loss and damage
Climate change is causing both economic and non-economic loss and damage through extreme weather events and slow-onset events (such as sea level rise and desertification). Economic loss and damage includes damage to crops, homes and infrastructure while non-economic loss and damage ranges from harm to human health to a loss of access to territory, cultural heritage and indigenous and local knowledge. There have been calls for compensation from developed countries to help developing countries, who are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, to address and minimise loss and damage.
A major focus of our work in this area is on how to strengthen global efforts to support those worse affected by loss and damage through financing, policy mechanisms and international agreements.
