Forests
Forests play an important role in mitigating climate change by removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Conversely, human practices such as deforestation contribute to climate change through the release of carbon dioxide from felled trees. Large-scale deforestation, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa and South America, has been driven by the global demand for agricultural commodities. This has led to large tracts of forest being cleared to plant high-value cash crops like palm oil and soya, and for cattle ranching.
Our work in this area focuses on policies and mechanisms aimed at reducing deforestation and promoting reforestation.
