Mohammad M. Alsahli

Mohammad M. Alsahli is a Professor of Geography at Kuwait University, specialising in geographic information science (GIScience), remote sensing, and environmental modelling, with a particular focus on climate change impacts and adaptation in arid and coastal environments. His work integrates satellite remote sensing, spatial analysis, and environmental modelling to assess environmental risks and support evidence-based decision-making in climate-vulnerable regions.
Professor Alsahli received his PhD in Geography (GIScience track) from the University of Kansas in the United States, where his research focused on spatial modelling and geospatial analysis of environmental systems. Since joining Kuwait University in 2010, he has contributed extensively to research on marine and coastal environments, including studies on water quality indicators, shoreline change, sea-level rise vulnerability, and environmental monitoring using satellite data.
He has been actively involved in national and international climate-related research initiatives, including Kuwait’s national climate change assessments and adaptation planning. His work frequently contributes to multidisciplinary collaborations linking geospatial science with environmental policy, climate risk assessment, and sustainable development in the Gulf region.
Background
Professor Alsahli has led and contributed to several national environmental and climate research projects in Kuwait, particularly those addressing climate change vulnerability, coastal risk, and environmental monitoring in the Northern Arabian/Persian Gulf. His research combines remote sensing observations, spatial modelling techniques, and environmental datasets to evaluate environmental change and support adaptation planning.
His recent work includes collaborative research on climate adaptation strategies for Kuwait and the broader Gulf region, with a focus on multi-hazard risks such as extreme heat, coastal flooding, and environmental degradation. Through these projects, he works with international research partners to integrate geospatial science into policy-relevant climate assessments and environmental management frameworks.
Research interests
Professor Alsahli’s research focuses on the application of geospatial science to environmental and climate challenges, particularly in arid and coastal regions. His main areas of interest include:
- remote sensing of marine and coastal environments, including water quality monitoring and coastal change
- spatial modelling of environmental risks and climate change impacts
- climate change vulnerability and adaptation in arid and semi-arid regions
- shoreline dynamics, sea-level rise, and coastal hazard assessment
- integration of satellite observations with environmental and climate datasets
- GIS-based decision support for environmental management and policy
