The Grantham Research Institute has announced today that Professor Sam Fankhauser, its Director, will be leaving in March 2021 to join the Oxford Net Zero Initiative at the University of Oxford. Professor Fankhauser joined the Institute when it was launched in November 2008 and has been Director since May 2011. He is also Co-Director of the ESRC Centre for Climate Change Economics and Policy and Principal Investigator for the Place-based Climate Action Network.

Professor Fankhauser said: “I have enjoyed my 12 years at the Grantham Research Institute, which has established itself as a world-leading university research centre, but I have decided that it is time for a new challenge in a new environment. I know that I am leaving behind many friends at the Institute and LSE, and I look forward to opportunities to collaborate with my former colleagues in my new role at Oxford.”

Professor Lord Stern of Brentford, Chair of the Grantham Research Institute, said: “Sam has shown real leadership as Director of the Institute and has played a crucial role in building its international reputation for research, policy analysis and engagement. We wish him well in the new role and hope to continue to work with him and his colleagues at Oxford. LSE has begun the search for his successor.”
