This news feature in Lancet Planetary Health summarises views on the adaptation outcome of COP30 and considers what comes next. It reports on how COP30 adopted a list of global adaptation indicators (the ‘Belem Adaptation Indicators’) to assess progress towards the eleven adaptation goals that countries adopted at COP28 as the ‘UAE Framework for Global Climate Resilience’ (see background on the Global Goal on Adaptation). The article cites work carried out by an expert group co-facilitated by Timo Leiter which submitted a proposed list of 100 indicators to the UNFCCC secretariat in September 2025 that was partially adopted at COP30. However, as discussed during LSE’s post-COP30 webinar, many indicators were substantially modified and will be difficult to operationalize.
