International wildlife trade and zoonotic disease
Join Legal Voices for the Future (LVF) for their September 2024 Knowledge Session on International Wildlife Crime and Zoonotic Disease hosted in partnership with the Grantham Research Institute and led by LVF’s Stewardship Committee member, Riley Forson.
Presentation
The session will explore the reasons behind international wildlife crime before turning to consider the impacts of illegal wildlife trade. We will be focusing on the health impacts and spread of zoonotic diseases. We will then consider the international legal frameworks designed to protect wild animals and plants from unsustainable, threatening trade.
Panel interview
LVF’s Riley Forson will then run a panel interview with Jenny and Dr James Desmond (Liberia Chimpanzee Rescue and Protection) and Alice Pasqualato of the Wildlife Conservation Society to discuss the on the ground impact of illegal wildlife trade, the impact of zoonosis on humans and animals, and the legislation in place.
Creative content
At the end of each session, there is a creative content element where members can discuss a piece of creative work which relates to the session, this can be a photograph, a poem, a video etc.! This month, the creative content will be a series of photographs by wildlife photographer William Fortescue called NOMADS.
The photographs show black and white images of animals native to Kenya and Uganda, most of which are listed on the Convention on International Wildlife Trade of Endangered Species of Fauna and Flora and form part of William’s various collections of photographs focusing on Africa’s animals.

About Legal Voices for the Future
Legal Voices for the Future is a collaborative knowledge-sharing forum established by young practitioners from different fields of law, whose objective is to give voice to a new generation of lawyers. We do so by holding monthly knowledge sessions open to everyone – lawyers and non-lawyers alike.
In order to bring fresh perspective, innovation and determination to pressing global issues such as climate change, each session is organised and led by a different member of Legal Voices for the Future
