“How to Strengthen Climate Democracy with Deliberative Citizen Participation?”

Register to join this event here

Mini-publics like citizen assemblies and citizen juries have been practiced in all corners of the world to combat the shortcomings of our democracies. Can these representative and deliberative processes encourage governments to take actions desperately needed for climate transitions?

On behalf of RETOOL, a new Horizon Europe project on climate democracy, we would like to invite you to join active citizens, practitioners and researchers from the UK, Estonia and Belgium for a hyperlocal discussion on 17th of May 2024. The discussion will explore how deliberative public participation can strengthen climate democracy and accelerate climate transitions.

Why join?

  • Gain new insights from researchers and civil society in deliberative participation methods
  • Experience a new hyperlocal discussion format, allowing you to exchange views with participants from London, Ghent and Tartu from your own city
  • Build bridges beyond existing partnerships and discuss ideas with new people.

The hybrid discussion is part of Hybrid European Democracy Festival, a discussion festival taking place on 17-18 May 2024 simultaneously in 15 locations over Europe.

Speakers:

  • Alina Averchenkova (Facilitator), Distinguished Policy Fellow, LSE and founding member, Knowledge Network on Climate Assemblies (KNOCA)
  • Teele Pehk, DD Center for Democracy, Climate Assembly organiser, Estonia
  • Precious Unegbu, Ghent University
  • Vitalii Tribelgorn, Participant of the Ida-Viru Climate Assembly, Estonia

Discussion questions:

  • How deliberative participation methods can be used to support achieving climate goals and strengthening democracy?
  • How to make mini-publics more impactful, also to maxi-publics?
  • Would climate assemblies help to empower young people as climate actors? Would they increase trust?
  • How can research help to solve these obstacles?

Hyperlocal discussion format

We want to break out of the usual virtual event mindset and create a truly immersive pan-European discussion experience. The new hyperlocal discussion format connects different views of citizens from London, Ghent and Tartu to a joint discussion room. Video and sound seamlessly link multiple festival hubs, allowing you to engage in pan-European dialogue from your own city.

To participate you need to come to a physical room, but in that room you’ll be digitally engaging with people in other countries who are also physically attending the festival.

Don’t miss this opportunity to shape the future of climate democracy!

We will be providing drink refreshments, but because the event is closer to Lunch time, please feel free to bring your own lunch!
