He will be presenting his paper ‘Do the effects of social nudges persist?’

Abstract:

This study formalizes a research design to uncover the mechanisms underlying long-term reductions in energy consumption caused by a widely studied social nudge. Our investigation considers two channels: technology adoption and habit formation. Using data from 38 natural field experiments, we isolate the role of technology adoption by comparing treatment and control group homes after the original household moves, which ends the treatment. We find that approximately two-thirds of energy reductions persist in the home after treatment ends and show this persistence is consonant with the technology adoption channel. The primacy of this channel has important implications for understanding, designing, and evaluating the long-term impacts of behavioral interventions.
