Legal Voices for the Future and the Grantham Research Institute at the LSE present our May knowledge session on ‘Climate change and risk: the critical role of the insurance sector in the climate crisis’.
May’s knowledge session will be led by Lucia Williams, Senior Associate at Clyde & Co and LVF member.
Presentation
The insurance industry is one of the largest in the world, estimated to be worth around $6 trillion. Insurance is ubiquitous, many types of insurance are mandatory, and its function as a crucial risk transfer mechanism has long been recognised. These characteristics make the insurance industry a key player in tackling the grave risks posed by climate change, and in facilitating a just transition.
This session will explore the threefold role of the insurance industry in the climate crisis, as: 1. a hub of knowledge, skills, data and capabilities on the assessment and evaluation of risk; 2. an enabler of the transfer and abatement of risk, that can encourage adaptation to and mitigation of climate change risk; and 3. one of the largest institutional investors globally, which can direct funds towards the transition to Net Zero. The session will highlight the role which lawyers can take within the industry and as trusted advisers, helping to assess risks and working collaboratively on solutions to the challenges posed by climate change, biodiversity loss and ensuring a just transition.
Panel discussion
This session will include a panel interview with Dr Franziska Arnold-Dwyer (Senior Lecturer in Insurance Law, Contract Law and Sustainability, and Director of the Insurance, Shipping and Aviation Law Institute at QMUL), Julie Luanco (Associate Director – Climate and Nature-related Liability at Howden), and Melanie Martin (Head of Legal at carbon insurer Kita).
Creative content
Each of our monthly knowledge sessions will include a small group discussion of ‘creative content’. This might be a podcast, a piece of music or a film. The creative content for this session will be announced shortly and updated here soon.

About Legal Voices for the Future
Legal Voices for the Future is a collaborative knowledge-sharing forum established by young practitioners from different fields of law, whose objective is to give voice to a new generation of lawyers. We do so by holding monthly knowledge sessions open to everyone – lawyers and non-lawyers alike. In order to bring fresh perspective, innovation and determination to pressing global issues such as climate change, each session is organised and led by a different member of Legal Voices for the Future.
