“[Our policy] the main plank of it is the demand for a National Referendum on Net Zero in order to have a proper national debate on its socio-economic effects and, in particular, its anti-progressive distributional effects on the working class population. We do not and never have got involved in scientific debates about climate change. We respect evidence-based policy formation while being aware of and dubious concerning the emergence of the manipulation of agenda by special interests as a standard feature of late liberal capitalist society.
As things stand today, were such a referendum to take place, we would argue for the abandonment of meaningless and counter-productive managerialist ‘targets’ (including the 2050 target and all others mentioned below) and a more holistic approach to environmental issues that looked at national sustainability in terms of two of our core principles – socialism and the working class interest. We would tend to emphasise adaptation and resilience as responses to climate change which humanity has had to face many times in the past and will face many times in the future.”

“I’m a pragmatist—nobody can argue that we need to protect the environment, but this should never come at the cost of jobs, businesses, or economic stability. Official government documents now admit that the rush to Net Zero risks wiping 10% off economic growth by the end of the decade and could even trigger a financial crash, with the poorest in society carrying the burden. Earlier this week, Kemi Badenoch told the truth—Net Zero by 2050 is impossible without bankrupting ourselves and driving up costs.” [Source: Sean Houlston Facebook 20 March].

“It is right to have net zero as a goal. Climate change has to be addressed by setting challenging targets. I believe that the biggest risk to not reaching that target isn’t a shortfall in technology or political will, it is a failure to fully engage the public. Once people feel that it is being imposed, there is the risk that climate change denial may become politically legitimised. This means more community involvement, a systems that feels fairer and greater honesty about the costs.
I believe we should see this as our generation’s moonshot, and we should be rightly proud of what we have done so far. Achieving such a significant rebalancing of our economy, our industry and our daily lives, for the communal benefit of mankind could one day be seen as our greatest achievement. That’s how I want people to feel about it, and that’s what I would champion as an MP for this constituency.”
