Gothenburg gathering of world’s leading climate researchers
Some of the world’s most prominent climate researchers are gathering on the 17th and 18th of October at the School of Business Economics and Law, University of Gothenburg to make an inventory of the research needs after the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 5th assessment report. Among the presenters are nine professors who were part of the panel, such as Ottmar Edenhofer, Co-chair of working group III. The World Bank Chief Economist for Climate Change, Marianne Fay will talk about how to make low carbon growth possible. The climate conference “Beyond IPCC- Future Paths for Climate Research” is organised by Thomas Sterner, professor in Environmental Economics at the University of Gothenburg. The main idea of the conference is to make an inventory of the research needs after the latest IPCC Assessment Report and explore new research areas such as behavioural economics and political economy and how they relate to the climate issue. Questions addressed will include:
- How do we assess the damages from climate change?
- What are the future outlooks for the diffusion of new technology?
- Can we expect a global climate treaty anytime soon?
- Should we reform the IPCC?
Ottmar Edenhofer who is the Co-Chair of Working Group III of the IPCC will give a keynote on “Mitigation of Climate Change” and draw on his experiences and insights from the 5th Assessment Report and what he believes are the main challenges for future research.
Other keynotes will be given by Charles Kolstad, Professor in Economics at Stanford University, on the economic research recommendations from the IPCC; and by Christian Gollier, Professor in economics at Toulouse School of Economics on the long run discount rate controversy which has been debated ever since the Stern Review in 2006; and also by Dallas Burtraw, Senior Fellow at Resources for the Future in Washington D.C. who is an expert on environmental regulation in the electricity sector. His talk will be about strategic behaviour and complementary policies under the Clean Air Act.
Some of the papers presented at the conference will be published in a special issue of Environmental and Resource Economics which Thomas Sterner will be the guest editor for. This special issue is expected to be out in 2015.
