XI LI Lecture 2022

New LSE Summer School accounting course on Sustainability Reporting in Capital Markets launched for 2023

This course offers insights into the role of sustainability reporting in helping the world achieve sustainability goals.

Developed and taught by the Department of Accounting’s Dr Xi Li and Dr Julia Morley, AC200: Sustainability Reporting in Capital Markets is one of LSE Summer School's newest courses focussing on sustainability, ESG, corporate social responsibility, and impact.

In the past decade, regulators, investors, and other stakeholders have increasingly demanded more information about firms’ environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance. This is evidenced by the exponential growth of sustainable investing in global capital markets and the mandating of disclosures by publicly listed firms.

"Today, while the world is working towards a more sustainable future, we also see a huge demand from employers for talents with sustainability and ESG knowledge. We develop this course hoping to bridge the knowledge gap between our traditional accounting education and what employers are looking for" states Dr Xi Li, Associate Professor of Accounting.

Taught over three-weeks, this new course evaluates the potential benefits of firms disclosing ESG information as well as significant challenges to be overcome, including the risk of greenwashing. It introduces students to existing and emerging ESG regulations and frameworks for ESG performance metrics. The course also explores how key market participants, such as capital providers (e.g., pension funds, private equity firms, banks, and asset managers), suppliers, and customers, could incorporate ESG information into their decision-making and the ways these participants could make a positive impact.

Sustainability Reporting in Capital Markets, AC200, is part of growing accounting courses on offer with LSE Summer School that includes:
