Pharmaceutical policy

Medicines are essential for modern healthcare, yet ensuring their availability, affordability, and appropriate use remains a persistent challenge. Global pharmaceutical spending exceeds $1.5 trillion annually, raising critical questions about value, access, and innovation incentives.

LSE Health's pharmaceutical policy research examines the complex ecosystem of drug development, regulation, pricing, and access. We analyse how different pricing and reimbursement mechanisms affect innovation and patient access, evaluate regulatory frameworks for ensuring medicine safety and efficacy, and investigate strategies for improving rational prescribing. Our work informs evidence-based policies that balance innovation incentives with equitable access to essential medicines.
