Part-Time Work

Are you looking to support yourself while at LSE?
Part-time work during your studies
Part-time or temporary work may be necessary for financial support during your studies, but it is also an opportunity to improve your CV and develop the skills and experiences that graduate employers look for.
LSE recommends that full-time students commit to no more than 15 hours of part-time work per week during term time. In vacation periods, depending on your visa, you might choose to work more than this. It's also important to prioritise your academic work if committing to a part-time job.
LSE Careers provides comprehensive guidance on part-time work during your studies, including a vacancies board for roles at LSE and beyond.
If you are studying on a student visa, you must ensure you understand the conditions of your visa, including the hours you can work during term-time and vacation periods, the type of work you can do, and the end date of your student status. Please see the guidance here for more information. For specific queries about your student visa, please contact the Student Advice and Engagement Team.
Part-time opportunities in the European Institute
External engagement roles
The European Institute's Engagement, Communications, and Marketing Team offer two job opportunities for MSc students at the beginning of the academic year. The links below provide job descriptions, application information and deadlines:
Research assistants
The European Institute does not have a regular scheme for MSc students to become research assistants during their studies. However, roles may be offered on an ad-hoc basis depending on our academics' research priorities and funding. When roles are available, we will contact our students via email.
If there is a person or research centre you would particularly like to work with, we recommend reaching out to them directly to express your interest. Research Assistant roles around LSE will also be advertised on the LSE CareerHub.
Internships
You may also be considering applying for an internship during your studies with us. You can find guidance on internships and possible opportunities on the LSE Careers website.
European Institute Internship Policy
In cases where an internship agreement is required by an employer, the European Institute does not normally approve student requests to take internships during term time. We want our students to fully benefit from the outstanding teaching and learning environment at the LSE and take full advantage of the resources and facilities on offer during their studies. Our MSc programmes are demanding, and our expectation is that all students spend their time during the term learning in order to best contribute towards the vibrant discussions that take place in classrooms and preparing for and writing the rigorous assessments students face throughout the academic year. In rare instances exceptions can be made. If you would like to take an internship during term time at LSE, please speak with the Head of the European Institute before applying to avoid disappointment.
Please note that this internship policy does not apply to the LSE Parliamentary Scheme.
