Student Engagement Programme

Make the most of your time at the European Institute
The EI is a vibrant and dynamic community. We are a relatively small and very friendly department, which means you have more opportunities to engage with both the other students on your programme, and the department as a whole. We offer a range of events and activities that positively contribute to our students’ experience within and beyond the classroom.
The Student Engagement Programme has three core aims:
- Enhance educational experience
- Build community between students, staff, and alumni
- Make the most of living in London
Core activities in the European Institute
Department Social Events
Throughout the year, we organise times for the whole EI community to come together and socialise. Whether it's a coffee catch-up mid-term, an end of term party, or a drinks reception in the sunshine, the EI social events are a chance to unwind and catch up with staff, students, and alumni!
Walking Tours
In the early weeks of Autumn Term, we run a series of themed walking tours led by an accredited London tour guide. The tours provide the opportunity to learn about the city that will be your home during your studies at LSE and meet some classmates studying on your MSc programme.
"The European Union in Practice: Politics and Power in the Brussels System" Seminar Series
The EU in Practice Seminar Series provides the opportunity to hear from and engage with EU policymakers, commentators, and academic experts on European politics. European Institute students who attend eight or more of the seminars receive a certificate of attendance at the end of the year.
The EI Conference at Cumberland Lodge
Set in the beautiful surroundings of Windsor Great Park, the EI annual student conference explores contemporary debates and pressing issues for Europe. It runs over three days, and includes keynote talks, workshops, a quiz, and free time to walk to Windsor. Spaces are limited to 80 students and there are additional costs associated with the trip. Watch our student vlog from the 2025 trip to see what to expect.
Alumni Advice Panels
We invite alumni back to LSE to share their experience on life as an EI student and beyond. Students can gain insights into possible career paths and continue conversations at networking evenings or over coffee.
Professional Skills Workshops
We run a series of themed workshops with practitioners working in fields of interest to our students, such as political risk, policymaking, and diplomacy. These workshops are only open to European Institute students. Check out this video from one of our workshop conveners, Greg Garramone, about his workshop on negotiating in a multilateral context.
Opportunities around LSE
LSE Careers
The European Institute has a dedicated careers consultant who offers one-to-one appointments and delivers workshops for European Institute students. Other opportunities offered by LSE Careers include Discover International Organisations and Careers in Brussels. The Careers in Brussels programme includes the Careers in Brussels Fair, usually in late-February, which provides the perfect opportunities to explore options, connect with other students, alumni, and employers, and begin to prepare applications. You can see our students' experience on last year's trip in this video.
LSESU Societies and Clubs
The Students' Union at LSE has over 250 student-led societies and clubs which you can join and get involved with. The LSESU European Society was founded over a decade ago by students in the European Institute and runs the European Policy Lab (LSE’s first and only student-run European policy think tank) but also hosts additional networking and career events.
LSE Volunteer Centre
Whether you are interested in a one-off volunteering activity or getting involved throughout the year, the LSE Volunteer Centre is there to help. The centre runs a variety of projects that you can join and offers workshops, events, and fairs to connect students with alumni and charity partners.
LIFE in London
LSE Life runs a series of events and activities throughout the year known as LIFE in London. You can register for these activities through LSE LIFE and go along to meet fellow students from across LSE while exploring all that London has to offer.
