What was your PhD thesis?

My dissertation looked at why prosperous developed countries borrow so much that they risk bankruptcy. The dissertation has since been published as a book

What has your job trajectory been since graduating?

I was a Max Weber Fellow at the European University Institute in Florence from 2011 to 2012. I have been at the University at Albany SUNY since then (as Assistant Professor until 2020, and Associate Professor since 2020). I am currently also the German Kennedy Memorial Fellow at the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies of Harvard University (2020-2021).

How did the PhD at the EI help you get into your sector?

The PhD program at the European Institute provided me with exceptionally rigorous theoretical and methodological training, which allowed me to land a tenure-track job at a research university (R1 in the American system), and to keep publishing my work in excellent journals and university presses.
