This theme has been led by Professor Mary Kaldor and her team and has involved organising joint workshops at TISS, LSE and Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok. It has resulted in two Civil Society Year Books being published in collaboration with TISS. Earlier editions of the year book have been launched in India supported by the LSE India Observatory (formerly LSE-India). The fifth edition of the yearbook was launched in New Delhi on 19th January 2006. The seventh edition of the yearbook was launched in Mumbai on 2nd May 2008.
Global Civil Society and Justice
A workshop on this theme was held at Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand during 7th – 9th January 2010. It involved presentations and discussions on the theme of civil society and justice and brought together academics from LSE, TISS and other partner institutions interested in this research. This led to the publication of the Global Civil Society 2011 Yearbook titled Globality and the Absence of Justice, published by Palgrave.
Global Civil Society and Poverty
Around 50 academics, civil society practitioners and policy-makers from around the world participated in a two-day workshop during 2nd - 4th May 2008 at TISS in Mumbai. The workshop Poverty and Global Civil Society explored the relevance and role of global civil society in relation to poverty reduction.
The workshop contributed towards the publication of the 8th edition of the Global Civil Society Yearbook in 2009. This edition was produced in collaboration with the Tata Institute of Social Sciences in Mumbai. The book was launched at LSE on 6th May 2009.
Global Civil Society, Sexualities and HIV/AIDS: Needs, Policies and Access
A two-day workshop was held at TISS on 11th and 12th January 2008. It explored the increasing interest of civil society organisations in different sexualities within the context of international HIV/AIDS policies. This workshop brought together twenty participants from the UK, Africa and Asia.
Following the workshop, options are being explored for possible publications and further development of the programme.
