Please join us for a panel discussion on the potential economic and social implications of the Covid19 pandemic with leading economic historians from the Department of Economic History, LSE.

These leading academics will seek to identify lessons from prior pandemics and economic crises to assess the likely economic and social effects of the current pandemic. Areas for exploration will include the impact of the virus and containment measures on economic activity and financial markets in the short and medium term, the shape and timing of economic recovery, the macroeconomic effects of the monetary and fiscal policy actions undertaken by governments to mitigate the impact of the pandemic, and potential societal changes that may result from the pandemic.

Professor Albrecht Ritschl is an internationally renowned expert on debt and financial crises, historical business cycles and macroeconomic and monetary history.

Professor Patrick Wallis is an expert on the economic, social and medical history of Britain and Europe, with a long-standing interest in the impact and responses to epidemics from the plagues  affecting 16th and 17th century England to AIDS and SARS.

The event will be chaired by Dr Peter Cirenza, lecturer in the Department of Economic History, and Chairman of Tikehau Capital UK, an alternative asset management firm.
