Dr Filiz Akgul has been conducting scholarly research on the intersection of political sociology and gender within a Middle Eastern context for over a decade
Her first book specialises in gender based violence and its similarities and discrepancies with police violence, as it appeared during Gezi Park protests in Turkey. Connecting two types of violence to causes that lie in specific political structures, she found patterns of oppression that were universalized across studies on gender in the Middle East.
Dr Akgul currently researches violence and deviance through conceptual and case study analysis of honor killings and restrictions on freedom of speech.
She is the author of "Patriarchal Theory Reconsidered: Torture and Gender Based Violence in Turkey", published by Palgrave in 2017.
