Algerian Studies Master's Prize 2021

Society for Algerian Studies and LSE Middle East Centre

Congratulations to LSE's Anna Nedey and University of Edinburgh's Mungo Patterson for their prize-winning dissertations!

The field for the 2021 Algerian Studies Master's Dissertation Prize was strong, with a diverse range of topics, but the judges were particularly impressed by Anna’s research into the role of memory and the Algerian War of Independence, which won first prize. The judges awarded second prize to Mungo’s study of Algerian Da'wa Salafism from a transnational perspective.

For Anna Nedey's prizewinning work, the judges remarked it was very well written with beautiful and gripping prose. The original approach of the research question and exploration into the role of memory was impressive. They commended the author's critical approach and analysis along with the strong use of primary sources and observation.

For Mungo Patterson's dissertation, the judges were impressed with the author’s use of primary sources and extensive use of Arabic texts. The dissertation addressed a topic that is very under-researched in the Algerian context and the findings challenged existing literature on the topic.

Launched by the Society for Algerian Studies and the LSE Middle East Centre, this prize is aimed at Master’s students in the UK conducting research on Algeria. It is designed to encourage and celebrate outstanding research focussed on Algeria.
