Our Latest Report

Our report, Supporting SME Housebuilders: Challenges and Opportunities, by Prof. Christine Whitehead and Adriana Gaganis, commissioned by the Federation of Master Builders, highlights the crucial role of small and medium-sized housebuilders in England’s housing market. The report explores barriers they face, such as planning delays, limited financing, and land shortages, and offers practical solutions such as streamlining planning, enhancing funding access, and investing in skills development. It emphasises the potential of SME housebuilders to meet growing housing demand while boosting local economies and communities.

Financialisation of housing

LSE London’s project, The Financialization of the Housing Market: An International Comparison, investigated how treating housing as a financial asset impacted affordability and accessibility in cities worldwide. Funded by the Knowledge Centre for Housing Economics, this research examined 13 global cities to understand financialization's role in rising house prices, rent trends, and its broader effects on local housing markets and policy responses.

Tall Residential Buildings

LSE London’s research in collaboration with the Tall Residential Buildings Research Group (TRBRG) examines the social and financial impacts of high-rise residential buildings in London. As housing density rises, this research explores how high-rise living affects residents' social experiences, especially for families, and assesses the long-term maintenance costs and financial implications for owners and residents. The book, What is the Future of High-Rise Housing?, consolidates current findings and outlines future research directions on these critical issues.

Homelessness

Over the last few years, LSE London has examined how some London boroughs are meeting their homelessness duties. In various research projects LSE London has looked at the types of people boroughs house, the accommodation they procure, the strategic decisions they make to improve their operations, and the problems they face in funding long-term solutions. The latest LSE London research project on homelessness focused on the London Borough of Hackney to identify the significant barriers to adequately housing young homeless individuals.
