Department of Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics is a core academic department within LSE, forming a vibrant intellectual community of outstanding students, internationally recognised faculty, professional services staff and alumni. In recent years the department has grown significantly, expanding its teaching provision and broadening its research and academic expertise.

Our teaching and research are closely connected and shaped by our position within a leading social sciences institution. We are committed to excellence in both, engaging with disciplines across LSE and addressing problems that sit at the interface of mathematics and the social sciences. The department encourages a supportive and inclusive environment, with a strong commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.

We offer a diverse portfolio of undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes, alongside a rich programme of research seminars and public lectures throughout the year. Our graduates pursue successful careers in academia, industry, finance, technology and public service, and the department contributes substantially to teaching across the school.
