Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

Promoting equitable treatment, championing diversity and developing an inclusive LSE.

Dr Galit Ashkenazi-Golan serves as the Equality Officer in the Department of Mathematics. Professional Services Staff support the delivery of departmental EDI initiatives, with Joe Faulkner currently acting as the first point of contact.

The school's commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion is one of it's six strategic priorities, as outlined in LSE Strategy 2030.

Equality of respect and opportunity

This is also embedded as a core principal within the School's Ethic Code. The LSE EDI office works to advance these commitments across all areas of the school community.

Gender equity in the Department of Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics is one of 28 academic departments at LSE. It offers three undergraduate programmes, three taught master's programmes and a PhD programme. Around two thirds of first year LSE undergraduates take at least one course within the department.

As a STEM department within a social sciences institution, issues of gender inequality were historically less visible. However, the department has made significant progress in addressing these challenges. While there is more work to be done, we are proud of the progress achieved to date, Our commitment to gender equity is reflected in our recent Athena Swan application and the successful attainment of a silver award.

Examples of LSE's Work

In 2017, LSE convened a self assessment team to work towards the ECU's Race Equality Charter Mark. The Race Equality Charter is focused on improving the representation, progression and success of black and minority ethnic (BME) staff and students in higher education.

This is a national charter mark, run by the Equality Challenge Unit, (ECU) that recognises the advancement of gender equality in higher education, representation, progression and success for all. The school has been awarded institutional Athena Swan Bronze Award.

LSE launched the 'Report It. Stop It.' initiative to help collectively end sexual violence, bullying, harassment and hate crime.

  • 'Developing LSE to Everyone' is one of the 3 priorities of the LSE 2030 strategy.
  • LSE also works closely with AccessAble to develop online access guides to all the Schools's buildings, and route maps around campus.
  • Over the years, LSE has been recognised for its EDI work by external organisations. For instance, in 2017, LSE was recognised as one of the top 30 employers for working families.
