About the Participants

Johannes Cramer

Johannes Cramer is Professor of Building and Urban History at the Technische Universität in Berlin. He is a leading expert in the field of Building Archaeology and has specialised for many years in the analysis and restoration of historic buildings, dealing directly with the presentation of artefacts to the public.

He recently edited a book addressing the question of the longing of the people for history and the role building archaeology should play in this context (Bauforschung - Eine kritische Revision. Historische Bauforschung zwischen Marketing und öffentlichem Abseits [Building archaeology- a critical revision. Building Archaeology between marketing and public offside], Berlin 2005).

Wilfried Lipp

Univ.-Doz. Dr Wilfried Lipp is the president of the Austrian National Committee of the International Council on Monuments and Sites, (ICOMOS Austria). He is also Director of the Austrian Federal Office for the Care of Monuments, department Ober Österreich, and Professor at the Paris-Lodron-Universität in Salzburg. This wide range of activities gives him an unusually wide perspective on the discipline, both from the theoretical point of view, and as regards the problems related with the public management of building heritage. Amongst other publishing activities he edited the book Denkmal - Werte - Gesellschaft. Zur Pluralität des Denkmalbegriffs [Monument- Values- Society. About the plurality of the definition of "monument"] (Frankfurt/New York 1993).
