Visiting Research Student (VRS) status allows research students from other academic institutions to spend up to one academic session (three terms/one academic year) in the Department of Management, LSE.

If you are interested in VRS look at the Department’s faculty research groups, and familiarise yourself with individual faculty members.
List of all our faculty and staff.

Research students interested in this scheme are invited to identify and contact Faculty directly about their area of research, and to ask if they will agree in principle to supervise them during their time at LSE. Find details of Faculty including research interests, publications and contact email on the Department of Management People page.

For Faculty to assess your suitability, please provide them with a rationale for your interest in visiting the Department of Management, a short summary of the work you hope to undertake with their supervision and a copy of your C.V.

All VRS must have the support of a Faculty member within the Department of Management before applying to the VRS programme.

Visiting Research Students can start their studies in either Autumn Term, Winter Term, or Spring Term.

At the end of the visit, the Department of Management’s PhD committee will require a report or summary of the outputs.

If you have questions about the VRS in the Department of Management, speak with the PhD programme manager or email Dom.Phd.Enquiries@lse.ac.uk for more information.

Assessing your application

You can apply to the VRS programme once you have a supervisor to support your application and the Department of Management PhD committee have agreed to accept your application.

To apply as a visiting research student, you apply in the same way as for our MRes/PhD programmes, with the same entry criteria. However applicants to our visiting research programme do not need to submit GRE or GMAT scores.

Find the entry criteria for all PhD Management programmes.

Please note: applications should be submitted at least 3 months prior to the starting term date. Students can start in Autumn Term, Winter Term and Spring Term. View term dates.

We welcome applications for research programmes that complement the academic interests of members of staff at the School, and we recommend that you investigate staff research interests before applying.

We carefully consider each application on an individual basis, taking into account all the information presented on your application form. The application process is similar to that of our research degrees

Submit your application via LSE’s Online Application System.

As part of your application, you will need to provide the following supporting documents:

  • Academic achievement (including existing and pending qualifications).
  • CV.
  • References.
  • GRE/GMAT score (if applicable).
  • Outline your research proposal or plan of work you will undertake as a visiting student.

You may also have to provide evidence of your English proficiency, although you do not need to provide this at the time of your application to LSE. See our English language requirements. Students must meet the English proficiency for Research Programmes – MPhil/PhD programmes.

Competition for places at the School is high. This means that even if you meet our minimum entry requirement, this does not guarantee you an offer of admission.
