Marcel Fukayama

Executive MPA

Class of 2017

Before joining the SPP I had designed, implemented and managed solutions to promote social change for fifteen years. So when I visited the LSE campus and saw the school's motto 'Rerum cognoscere causas' - to understand the cause of things - it seemed like a friendly environment to develop my next level of impact as an entrepreneur.

Marcel is Cofounder of Din4mo and Sistema B Brazil, Head of Global Policy at B Lab Global, and member of the Advisory Council for Brazil Presidency.

My time at the SPP was a tremendous privilege. The EMPA offered me access to a world-class community of teachers and students, and an opportunity to strengthen both my network as well as my professional background. The interdisciplinary training in economics and political science shaped the way I see problems and develop solutions to tackle them.

Before joining the SPP I had designed, implemented and managed solutions to promote social change for fifteen years. So when I visited the LSE campus and saw the school's motto Rerum cognoscere causas - to understand the cause of things - it seemed like a friendly environment to develop my next level of impact as an entrepreneur.

I have played different roles in my work. I work with impact investing and my company has been a pioneer in crowdequity and blended finance for positive impact. I set up the B Corp Movement in Brazil, led the expansion throughout Latin America and the Caribbean, and currently I'm the head of global policy at B Lab. I envision a world where businesses and capital markets behave with the purpose of positive impact, accountability with their stakeholders and commitment with transparency. In order to scale such behavioural, structural and cultural changes, we have to change the rules of the game.

A few months after my graduation, I had the opportunity to strategically advise Mrs. Marina Silva in her presidential campaign in 2018. In 2022, I played the role as general campaign manager and Mrs Marina Silva was successfully elected to Congress and then chosen in early 2023 as Environment and Climate Change Minister. Recently, I was appointed a member of the Advisory Council for President Lula to support the government towards an economic transition to a more inclusive and sustainable model - facing the climate emergency and inequalities is imperative.

I am the first generation that went to school in my family. Going to a top ranked school in the UK. Taking an immersive programme in foreign language, different culture and methodology. Running simultaneously my social ventures. Flying over 300,000 km during the programme. Connecting with a global community of practitioners and lecturers. These are all elements that make me feel proud to join the LSE Alumni Network and keep spreading the word about the importance to "know the cause of things".
