About
Michael Thomas is a postdoctoral research fellow in the Popular Government in Global Perspective project, funded by the European Research Council. He studies democracy and religion in 19th and 20th century Latin America. His dissertation, Moving Heaven and Earth: Theology and Popular Rule in Modern Latin America examines how theorists and political actors transformed concepts from Catholic social theory, theology, and popular religion to justify, expand, and defend regimes of popular rule. His research has appeared in the American Journal of Political Science. Broadly, Michael is interested in the history of modern political thought (especially 19th-century Europe and Latin America), democratic theory and practice, and religion and politics.
