About
Jonny Brooks is currently working as a Research Assistant with Dr Giannis Efthymiou. Their research explores how values, institutions, and media narratives shape students’ perceptions of responsibility, justice, and climate engagement. Alongside his work at the International Inequalities Institute, he is Communications and Operations Manager at Action Village India, an NGO supporting projects in climate resilience, girls’ education, women’s economic empowerment, and rural livelihoods.
His research interests lie in the politics of development, with a particular emphasis on the political ecology of resource extraction and governance. He has previously analysed uneven development, dispossession, and conflict in Western China through Foucauldian and Marxian lenses. He is now interested in frontier-making scholarship in relation to the just transition and focuses on India and, more broadly, the Global South. He has experience in both qualitative and quantitative research methods, including interviews, focus groups, and multivariate regression.
Jonny holds an MSc in Environment and Development from the London School of Economics and Political Science and a BSc in Social Policy from the University of Bristol. He has been awarded an ESRC Grand Union DTP Studentship to pursue a DPhil in International Development at the University of Oxford, under the supervision of Professor Nikita Sud, starting in October 2026.
