Jason Luo is an LSE Fellow in Political Science and Public Policy. He works on how artificial intelligence reshapes governance in China and beyond, with related research on political economy, information and technology politics, and computational social science.
His dissertation-turned book project examines how AI adoption across Chinese government operations amplifies rather than resolves the principal–agent problems of autocratic rule. His recent co-authored work tests the concern among policymakers and international media that Chinese AI exports drive democratic backsliding, finds little evidence for that technologically determinist view, and points instead to the agency of local actors and institutions in recipient countries. His research has appeared in The China Journal and the Journal of Chinese Political Science. He holds a PhD and an MA from Stanford University and a BA from Peking University.
