About
Finn McEvoy is a data scientist in the School of Public Policy, where he serves as the Growth Lab's data manager. He leads research projects that apply frontier methods and untapped data to live policy questions, working closely with government partners to turn new data sources into evidence policymakers can use.
Much of his work is in economic measurement, collecting and applying unconventional datasets to fill critical gaps in official statistics. With Professor Richard Davies, he built the AutoCPI project, which collects millions of prices a week to understand inflation dynamics with unprecedented granularity. The technical foundation and the policy research it has enabled have supported methodology and analysis collaborations with the Bank of England, HM Treasury and HMRC, and the project won the LSE Impact Prize: Spark Award in 2025. He has chaired sessions and workshops on economic measurement in the UK and internationally, including at the ESCoE Conference on Economic Measurement and the Economic Measurement Workshop at Hitotsubashi University, Tokyo.
His research also covers public finances and trade. With Richard Davies, he co-authored "Markets, birth-rates, watchdogs: the evolving fiscal constraint in advanced economies", which uses macro-financial data to explore the growing constraint that sovereign bond markets place on fiscal policy. He leads theory-based evaluation projects with the UK government, designing logic models and evaluation frameworks for the UK's free trade agreements, and contributes economic analysis to government consultations.
Finn teaches on PP434 Automated Data Visualisation for Policymaking, led by Professor Richard Davies, and contributes to the Economics Observatory's masterclasses for civil servants. He received LSE's Excellence in Education Award in 2025 for outstanding teaching contribution and educational leadership.
