Welcome from Professor Alex Gillespie, Head of the Department of Psychological and Behavioural Science

I am delighted to welcome you to the Department of Psychological and Behavioural Science (PBS). Congratulations on earning your place; we are excited to be part of your next step.

You are joining a world-leading department with a long and distinguished history of tackling societal issues. Today there is no shortage of challenges that need our skills: planetary health, wellbeing, inequality, the future of work, and intergroup division. We develop practical theories that let us see the world in new ways, and change it. Our research moves from the world to the lab and back again.

Our aim is to equip you with a deep understanding of human psychology and behaviour, practical skills, and social networks that will enable you to excel in your chosen domain. Whether you are new to university, deepening your expertise or changing direction, you will be supported by LSE Careers and graduate with advanced, evidence-based skills that employers value. You will also work alongside researchers who are shaping their fields, and your dissertation is your chance to contribute to that work. Our faculty and facilities are now available to you, but you will need to be proactive.

These webpages will provide you with key information. They should be read in conjunction with your programme handbook. Also, be sure to download the Student Hub app so you can book office hours, check your timetable, and find events.

We strive to maintain an informal, friendly and supportive environment. No matter who you are, or where you have come from, you belong here. If you encounter any problems of any kind, be they academic, financial, or emotional, we can help. You should talk either to your Academic Mentor or our professional services colleagues. Do not hesitate to contact us.

While it can be tempting to focus only on your studies, I also recommend engaging in the broader academic life of the department and LSE. Attend guest lectures, participate in socials, and join societies. You will get more than free snacks. You will meet talented peers from every corner of the world. Make the most of it; let them challenge you. It can lead to new ideas, unexpected friendships, and a lot of fun.

I look forward to seeing you around.
