Dr Katie Young appointed as Director of LSE Health’s new Health System Resilience Unit
LSE Health is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Katie Young as Senior Health Policy Fellow and Director of the new Health System Resilience Unit.

The Unit, based at LSE Health, has been established with funding from AstraZeneca and Philips. The Unit will examine how health systems can deliver high-quality care sustainably in the face of demographic, epidemiological, technological and economic challenges. As part of its mission, the new Unit will oversee the research programme for the Partnership for Health System Sustainability and Resilience (PHSSR), a longstanding partnership bringing together academia, industry and global organisations with a unified goal of improving health globally by building more sustainable and resilient health systems for the future.
Katie joins LSE Health after serving as Lead for Healthcare Transformation at the World Economic Forum (WEF), where she conceived, launched and led two initiatives focused on tackling Antimicrobial Resistance and Outcome-Based Care, along with the WEF’s collaboration with PHSSR.
A clinician by training, Katie completed an Executive MSc in Health Economics, Policy and Management at LSE before joining the WEF. Alongside her studies, she worked in healthcare consulting, advising pharmaceutical and medical technology companies as well as UN agencies in Switzerland.
Katie’s clinical, policy and academic background includes experience across healthcare systems in Europe, the US and Australia, as well as in international partnerships. In the UK, she was closely involved in surgical clinical trials and in analysing the national management of lower-limb trauma.
Reflecting on her appointment, Katie said:
“I’m both honoured and excited to be taking on this role, and very much looking forward to shaping and growing the Unit.”
George Wharton, Associate Professor and Deputy Head of the Department of Health Policy (Education) at LSE, added:
“We are delighted to welcome Katie back to LSE as the Director of the new Unit. She brings clinical and policy experience, a track record of building international initiatives, and an outstanding network. We are looking forward to seeing how she shapes the Unit's programme over the coming years.”
