The AI, Ethics and Governance group represent research within the LSE Law, Technology and Society group at the cutting edge of law and technology. The group represents a diverse range of interests from applied ethics and governance in medical research and technologies to the application of AI and machine learning in financial markets and financial instruments through to the implications of data profiling of adults and children to the general research of AI ethical and legal frameworks. The group works hard to make their research accessible and relevant in policy circles. With members acting as expert advisors and members of bodies including the British Medical Association and the Medical Research Council, the LawTech Delivery Panel and Regulatory Action Taskforce, the World Health Organisation, and the Superior Health Council of Belgium.
The AI, Ethics and Governance group provide regulator keynote speakers, expert witnesses and roundtable experts to global conferences, workshops and inquiries. In the past three years members of the group have spoken to or at the Ministry of Justice, the High Court and the Judicial College, the Royal Institution, the Annual ICA Conference, and the WHO Action Network on Reducing Marketing Pressure on Children. In addition, Professor Murray acted as the Special Advisor to the House of Lords Communications Committee for the duration of its inquiry into internet regulation and governance and to the Ministry of Commerce and Investment of Saudi Arabia on its project to reform e-commerce law in Saudi Arabia.
The group have published extensively in this field including leading books such as Professor Jackson’s Law and the Regulation of Medicines and Professor Murray’s Rethinking the Jurisprudence of Cyberspace as well as leading articles such as Dr. Cutts’s Degenerate Contracts and Liberal Code and Dr. Paech’s The Governance of Blockchain Financial Networks. Currently Dr. Cutts is working on a book on artificial intelligence and the theory of adjudication (Artificial Adjudication). The group also contributes heavily to the LSE Law Policy Briefing Series including Professor Murray’s recent paper Rethinking Regulation for the Digital Environment and Professor Jackson’s paper Reforming the Statutory Storage Period for Frozen Eggs.
