China and Africa: building peace and security on the continent
Join us for a discussion panel with Prof Chris Alden, Dr Laura Barber, Prof Abiodun Alao and Dr Zhang Chun, co-editors and co-authors of the book China and Africa: building peace and security on the continent.
This book is the first comprehensive and detailed study of the growing security links between China and the African continent. It investigates how China’s links with Africa’s continental and regional organizations, especially the African Union, connect with security links the PRC has developed with key African countries.
Drawing on leading and emerging scholars in the field, the volume uses a combination of analytical insights and case studies to unpack the complexity of security challenges confronting China and the continent. The book assesses an array of case studies of China’s involvement in country-specific Africa security contexts, and interrogates how security considerations impact upon the growing economic and social links China has developed with African states.

About the speakers
Prof Chris Alden, Department of International Relations, London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), has published widely on China-Africa issues and is a research associate of the South African Institute for International Affairs (SAIIA) and Department of Political Sciences, University of Pretoria.
Prof Abiodun Alao, African Leadership Centre, School of Global Affairs, King’s College London, has published extensively on African studies. He is also holds Visiting Professorship position at the Nigerian Defence Academy.
Dr Zhang Chun, Deputy Director, Institute of Foreign Policy Studies, Shanghai Institutes for International Studies, China, has published widely on China-Africa relations, African peace and security, international theory, and China's foreign policy; and Deputy Editor-in-Chief of 2 Journals namely Global Review (in Chinese) and China Quarterly of International Strategic Studies (CQISS) (in English).
Dr Laura Barber Political risk analyst based in London, previously of the LSE. She specialises in in Chinese foreign policy towards Africa with a particular focus on China-Sudan and South Sudan relations.

Mr Rodríguez Larreta will present a talk on the city's urban environment and global vision, given that in the following months, Buenos Aires will be hosting four major global events, namely the ILO Global Conference, the WTO Ministerial Conference, the 2018 Youth Olympics and the G20.

About the Speaker: Mr Larreta was elected Mayor of Buenos Aires in December 2015 with more than 53% of the votes. He first started participating actively in politics in 2002 alongside Mauricio Macri, with whom he founded the PRO Party in 2005.
Previously, he held several positions in the public sector, such as in the office of Investment Undersecretary of the Agrentine Ministry of Economy, General Manager of the ANSES (National Administration of Social Security), Undersecretary of Social Policies of the Social Development Secretary, in the Internal Revenue Service of PAMI (the biggest Social Care Department in Latin America), Financial Controller at the Institute for Social Security of the Province of Buenos Aires and General Director of the General Tax Office.
Mr Larreta holds a Licentiate degree in Economics from the Universidad de Buenos Aires (1988) and a Master's Degree in Business Administration from Harvard University (1993).

Myanmar’s borderlands have experienced armed conflict ever since the country’s independence in 1948. Attempts by successive military governments to secure control over these contested areas, and the willingness to deploy military force to achieve this ambition, have fuelled longstanding grievances against central state authority.
Against this backdrop of decades-long ethno-national conflict, the country’s borderland regions have given birth to a dazzling array of non-state armed groups, including insurgencies, militias, vigilantes, and criminal networks. They are part of a fragmented and multi-layered landscape of political order, which also includes semi-autonomous army commands, transnational business actors and other informal institutions. Based on years of extensive field work in the border areas of Myanmar, the speakers will discuss the dynamics of armed politics, social orders and state formation in light of the country's peace process and wider transition.

Skills for the future: The challenges of human capital formation in Latin America
Speaker: Dr Lucila Berniell
Chair: Prof. Chris AldenDr. Lucila Berniell is a Research/Principal Economist in the Socio-economic Research Department at CAF. In her research, she seeks to understand the formation of human capital in developing countries, with the aim to help design and evaluate public policies to foster skills development. She has worked on education, health, entrepreneurship, and labor programs for the youth, and has co-authored several academic articles and books on her fields of specialization. She holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (Spain). She is currently teaching at Universidad Torcuato Di Tella and at Universidad Nacional de La Plata (Argentina).

Global Britain, Global Challenges: Africa and international partners are banning the Ivory trade. Should Britain follow suit?
The announcement by China of its intention to close its domestic ivory markets by the end of 2017, following the lead of the majority of African governments, India and the US, is a potential game-changer in global efforts to ensure elephant survival. With over 20,000 African elephants slaughtered for their tusks since 2008 – a rate unsustainable for the survival of the species - the need for bold action is imperative. The commitments by the US in 2016 and China in 2017 to ban ivory sales are crucial steps in bringing the wanton destruction of elephants and their habitats to a halt, offering a dramatic example of the innovative co-operative partnerships necessary to build sustainable development in the 21st century.
A panel of distinguished diplomats and experts will discuss why many governments are joining forces to bring an end to the ivory trade, what challenges they face in implementing their commitments and what Britain can do to support this growing international consensus.

Aiming to bridge the gap between academics, policy makers and practitioners, the conference unpacked the evolving conceptual landscape on humanitarian intervention and its application as seen from the South. Comparative case studies helped to highlight the varied approaches and experiences from the South. Participants included the former Turkish Foreign Minister, the Honourable Hikmet Cetin, and leading academics and policy makers.

He was Bolivia's Minister of Planning and Coordination and Head of the Economic and Social Cabinet between 1989 and 1991. In addition, he acted as Bolivia's Governor at the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, and the River Plate Basin Development Fund. He is the Chair of the World Economic Forum's Global Agenda Council on Latin America, Vice President of Canning House, Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of the Inter-American Dialogue, member of the Advisory of the Latin American Program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, Harvard Kennedy School Dean's Council, among others.

Set over two days at the University of Birmingham, this workshop critically examined the prospects of either cooperation or competition between Brazil and the United Kingdom in several dimensions of contemporary global order.

17th January, 2014: First Annual CAF-LSE Conference, The Rise of the Global South: Towards an Agenda for a New Century Perhaps the most important development of the contemporary century is the emergence of the global South onto the stage of world politics. The first annual CAF-LSE conference will be held on Friday 17th January 2014 at the London School of Economics.
This conference will contribute to understanding the rise of the global South by focusing on key international actors from the regions, their perspective on global issues, the role of South-South cooperation as a development paradigm, and their current impact on a changing global environment.
International speakers will present their perspectives on this emerging phenomena through empirical investigation, case studies and panel discussions which will address the actual strategic aims of actors from the global South. They will also explore the structural problems the South is facing, with a view to advancing the conceptualisation of a clear and effectual foreign policy for these emerging powers.

UNDP Human Development Report Consultation

The LSE Global South Unit in cooperation with the UNDP hosted an important Consultation to discuss the 2014 Human Development Report. The Consultation took place at the London School of Economics, and was by invitation only. Leading academics and representatives of civil society were invited to offer their expertise on the topic Reducing Vulnerabilities and Deepening Progress. From the beginning, the Report has been a pioneer of methodological innovation and development thinking. Often provocative, the Report was launched in 1990 with the goal of putting people at the centre of development, going beyond income to assess people’s long-term well- being.

As the lead author of the 2013 UNDP Human Development Report, Mr Malik shared the important findings of the report and highlighted the unprecedented speed and scale of the rise of the Global South.
