Global Perspectives on Europe

A Jean Monnet Chair project hosted by the European Institute at LSE
Global Perspectives on Europe (GLOPE) is a Jean Monnet Chair project led by Dr Mareike Kleine at the European Institute and co-funded by the European Union’s Erasmus+ Programme. The project is running from September 2025 to 2028 and aims to internationalise EU studies by embedding a global perspective into teaching, research, and outreach—especially for audiences beyond Europe.
About the project
Context and aim of the project
The European Union is a key global actor, yet EU studies often remain narrow in scope — Eurocentric, complex, and inaccessible to audiences outside Europe. GLOPE addresses this disconnect by placing Europe in its global context. The project seeks to make EU studies more inclusive and outward-looking, broadening their appeal to international students, scholars, and practitioners.
Why the European Institute
Based at the LSE European Institute — home to one of the world’s largest postgraduate communities for the study of Europe — GLOPE benefits from a truly international academic environment and an expansive alumni network that spans over 110 countries.
Anticipated outcomes
GLOPE will develop innovative teaching modules, including a revised MSc curriculum. It will support international academic exchange through the Jean Monnet Travel Award and host a global workshop on “International Perspectives on EU Studies.” Through the public event series Global Dialogues on Europe and a dedicated online presence, GLOPE also engages broader audiences in conversation about Europe’s global role.
Receiving the Jean Monnet Chair is a great honour — and a unique opportunity to rethink how Europe is taught, studied, and communicated in a rapidly changing world. At the European Institute, we’re excited to open new global dialogues on the EU and its role in the world.
