Yasmin Getirana holds a B.Sc. in International Relations from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-RIO) and a M.Sc. in Social History from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).
Her master's thesis was prized as the best one defended in the Social History Department of UFRJ in 2023 and was published as a book in early 2024 under the title "Na casa e na causa: A organização sindical das trabalhadoras domésticas (Rio de Janeiro, 1961-1973)". Written in Portuguese, it delves into the creation and functioning of the first professional association of domestic workers in Rio de Janeiro during Brazil's military dictatorship, as well as their struggle for recognition and labour rights.
Her main topics of interest are Social Labour History, specially its relations to gender, race, religion and urban studies. She is a member of the Laboratory for the Study of the History of the Worlds of Labour (LEHMT/UFRJ), aiding in the production and diffusion of Public History regarding work and workers, and has also written and directed two short archival documentaries.
PhD Title: "The organisation of domestic workers in Brazil and Colombia through the Young Christian Workers movement, 1956-1988".
For her PhD, Yasmin will research organised female domestic workers in the transnational Catholic movement Young Christian Workers in Brazil and Colombia. Awarded an AHRC LAHP Studentship, she is supervised by Dr Anna Cant and co-supervised by Dr Tanya Harmer at the International History Department at LSE.
