Department of Economic History

Study Economic History at LSE
Economic History uses concepts and theories from the social sciences as a starting point for studying the development of real economies and understanding them in their social, political and cultural contexts.
This academic year the Department of Economic History is celebrating 130 years of existence, as one of the founding departments of LSE. When established in 1895 it quickly became a centre of excellence, drawing scholars from around the world. We are currently the largest specialist department in the UK, and home to a huge range of expertise from the Middle Ages to the current century, covering every major world economy.
