Scholarship in MSc Financial History
The Department is pleased to announce that, due to a generous donation from Peter Oppenheimer (BSc in Geography, 1985), we are able to offer the Goldman Sachs Gives (UK) – Oppenheimer MSc in Financial History Scholarship to a student domiciled in the UK for the academic year 2024-25.
Patrick Wallis, Head of Department said “it is a truly generous contribution and one that will transform a student’s experience here”.
Economic History Investment Competition
Once again, our student investment competition was incredibly popular - the standard of entrants was very high and the competition was hard fought! You can read more about the teams and meet the winners here. We are grateful to Gerben Bakker and the panel of judges, Anisha Gangwani, Joachim Liese and Steve Mobbs who gave up their weekends to participate. Particular thanks go, once again, to Peter Cirenza, who furnishes the first prize - a day shadowing analysts at leading asset management and investment firm, Tikehau Capital.
When Nation's Can't Default: A History of War Reparations and Sovereign Debt
Simon Hinrichsen (University of Copenhagen) tells the history of war reparations and their consequences through the lens of history, political economy, and open economy macroeconomics. He argues that reparations are unlike other sovereign debt because repayment is enforced by military and political force, making it a senior liability of the state. His book analyses fifteeen episodes of war reparations, looking at when they were paid and when not.
Simon Hinrichen recently graduated from LSE with a PhD from the Department of Economic History.
You can find out more about his book here: When nations can't default.
