Launch of Council on Urban Initiatives' new housing case study report

18 October 2023

On 16 and 17 October Ricky Burdett, Co-chair of the Council on Urban Initiatives, launched a new case study report – Housing and the City – at the Healthy City Design 2023 (HCD 2023) International Congress in Liverpool.

Housing is a political, economic and spatial problem – housing has become financialised, an asset not a right. For more inclusive housing and health equity, it must be designed as part of the city, with access to jobs, services, shops and public spaces. Central to this is public ownership of land and housing stock.

Ricky Burdett, Co-chair, Council of Urban Initiatives and Director, LSE Cities

The publication Housing and the City: case studies of integrated urban design, brings together a series of housing initiatives from different cities that are developed to promote inclusive, sustainable and integrated designs. The schemes range in scale and geographic location, but in each case represent a clear commitment to achieve positive social and environmental outcomes through innovative yet people and planet-focused design. Ricky spoke as part of the Housing and Health Equity event hosted by Council on Urban Initiatives knowledge partner Impact on Urban Health. He encouraged the audience to take a holistic view regarding health and housing in cities, highlighting that a large percentage of the built form in cities is made up of housing which makes housing deeply social. He went on to argue that we need to consider not just the social determinants of health as articulated by the opening speaker in the session Sir Michael Marmot but also to the think about the spatial determinants of health.

The Healthy City Design 2023 (HCD 2023) International Congress is a global forum for the exchange of knowledge on the research, policy and practice of designing healthy and sustainable cities and communities. The Congress is organised by SALUS Global Knowledge Exchange in collaboration with the Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design, Royal College of Art, and is supported by CUI Knowledge Partner Impact on Urban Health
