Shillong Urban Strategy Review Launched by LSE Cities
LSE Cities has been commissioned by the Government of Meghalaya, India, to undertake an urban strategy review for Shillong, the state capital. Designed for a population of 300,000 but now facing significant infrastructure pressures due to rapid urbanisation, Shillong is the focus of a new multi-nodal development approach. The strategy centres on three interconnected hubs: the existing city, positioned as a place where innovation aligns with cultural heritage; New Shillong City, a new administrative centre 10 km away that will host the Legislative Assembly and Secretariat; and New Shillong Knowledge City, planned as a cultural, sports, hospitality, and knowledge hub.
