Dr Timothy Liau's new book Standing in Private Law: Powers of Enforcement in the Law of Obligations and Trusts (OUP, 2023)  is the first monograph on the place and significance of standing within private law, arguing for the distinctiveness of standing as a private law concept and the existence of standing rules in private law. It takes a philosophically informed approach to a private law puzzle, supported by extensive doctrinal analysis. The book explains the importance of standing in existing debates within contemporary private law theory about rights and remedies, duties and powers, and the role of the state.

Here is an excerpt from the foreword to the book, by the Hon Justice James Edelman of the High Court of Australia:

"Standing in Private Law is a ground-breaking work, shining a light upon the neglected private law standing rules and urging a clarity of thought from which the developed public law standing rules might also benefit. It is a work of deep theory, building upon the writing of some of the great legal theorists of the 20th and 21st centuries…The understanding that Dr Liau encourages will have significant effects on private law legal doctrine… the intellectual and theoretical depth of Standing in Private Law makes it essential reading for those involved in legislative reform of standing in private law, no less than those who seek to understand at common law the power to enforce rights in a legal system."
