We are a community of students, staff and alumni from all over the world, who bring an unparalleled international and interdisciplinary outlook in teaching and researching law. We are committed to building a vibrant, equitable and truly inclusive environment and this is critical to our identity. Our community is one of the largest in the School, and has played a major role in policy debates, policy-making and the education of lawyers and law teachers globally.
Our approach is to challenge existing ways of thinking, and seek to understand the causes of things. This has always been our mission in the LSE Law Department.
Closely linked to this innovative approach has been the exploration of new fields of study. Many important subjects were first taught and examined systematically from an academic perspective in our Department. We pioneered the study of banking law, taxation law, civil litigation, company law, labour law, family law, aspects of welfare law, and studies of the legal system and the legal profession, and continue to be the leading thinkers in our field. Click here to read more about our history, spanning a hundred years of teaching and research, from our centenary celebrations in 2019.
Our Department is now one of the world’s best. In the UK, it was ranked first for research outputs in the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF) and in the top 5 law departments overall by The Complete University Guide in 2018. In the 2017 QS World University rankings, the Department was ranked seventh (out of 200 departments worldwide). We strive to accomplish excellence in all of our endeavours, helping students, alumni and staff to achieve their full potential in everything they do.
