I welcome inquiries from researchers, policy-makers, journalists, and students in the following areas:
- African Politics: I have particular knowledge of the Great Lakes of Africa comprising Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
- Political and Ethnic Violence: I have a particular interest in civil wars, ethnic conflicts, and genocides, and to a lesser extent terrorism, insurgencies, and guerrilla warfare.
- Ethnic and Religious Diversity: I am particularly interested in the conceptualisation and measurement of ethnic diversity and in strategies to mitigate its less desirable effects.
My first project was a study of the Rwandan genocide. The project aimed to develop the micro-foundations of inter-group collective violence and in particular sought an answer to the question of how and why certain individuals come to participate in such violence but others not. I am now working on a project entitled The Micro-foundations of Communal Coexistence and Cooperation which explores individual-level strategies for promoting positive intergroup attitudes and behaviours in ethnically and religiously plural societies.
Prior to joining the LSE I held research fellowships at Harvard University, in the International Security and Intra-state Conflict programmes at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, and then at Oxford University, in the Department of Politics and International Relations. My professional experience outside of the Academy includes work as a Policy Officer for the World Bank, as a Legal Officer for the Government of Guyana, and on electoral missions for the OSCE and UN. I currently co-run a non-profit organisation which develops leadership potential in children caught in northern Uganda's civil war: www.thechildisinnocent.org
I hold law degrees from Kings College London and the Université de Paris I, Panthéon-Sorbonne, a Masters degree in International Development Studies from George Washington University, and a PhD in Development Studies from the London School of Economics. I’m also an Attorney (non-practicing) admitted in New York.
