Research

Statistics is a fast-moving discipline, of critical importance to a wide range of scientific, economic and societal challenges. The Department undertakes research in a data-intensive contemporary environment to develop cutting-edge statistical methods, and where appropriate, apply these to help solve ‘real-world’ problems.

We are home to a thriving research community, with a particular focus on four key areas: data science; probability in finance and insurance; social statistics; and time series and statistical learning.

We foster a collaborative culture where our PhD students receive excellent training, early career researchers develop into outstanding independent scientists and staff of all levels realise their full potential.

All aspects of our research at the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 were rated either world-leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*), and more than half of our publications received the top 4* grading.

We host an annual research showcase event that provides a platform for our academics to present select work to an audience of peers, industry partners and the public.

Our research groups

Our research activities and researchers are grouped into our four key subject areas: Data science; Probability in finance and insurance; Social statistics; and Time series and statistical learning. Click on the groups below to find out more.

Our REF 2021 case studies

The three case studies submitted by our Department to the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021, demonstrated the high quality of our research. Submitted jointly with the LSE Department of Mathematics to the Mathematical Sciences Unit, all aspects of our research were rated either world-leading (4*) or internationally excellent’(3*), and more than half of our publications received the top 4* grading. This result established the Department in the top 10 of a total of 54 UK university submissions for Mathematical Sciences in REF 2021.Click on the projects below to find out more.
