PhD Scholarship
Maria Kandarakis Memorial PhD Scholarship
We are pleased to announce the Maria Kandarakis Memorial PhD Scholarship, supporting one funded PhD place within the Department of Philosophy, Logic and Scientific Method.
This award is made possible through a generous donation supporting research aligned with the mission of The Jeremy Coller Centre for Animal Sentience.
To be eligible for consideration for this award, you must:
- Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) to The Jeremy Coller Centre for Animal Sentience by the deadline of 23 February 2026.
- Apply for the MPhil/PhD Philosophy programme in the Department of Philosophy, Logic and Scientific Method for admission in the 2026/27 academic year*
- Applicants' research must align with the mission of the Jeremy Coller Centre for Animal Sentience.
Selection for this scholarship is based on research potential. There is one scholarship available to be awarded.
*Applicants may submit their EOI before submitting their PhD application. However, the complete PhD application must be submitted by the departmental deadline of 27 May 2026 to remain eligible. The scholarship will be conditional on the applicant subsequently receiving and accepting an offer.
The award will cover tuition fees and provide a stipend identical to an LSE Studentship for four years.
We will make an initial conditional nomination after reviewing expressions of interest.
The nominated candidate will then need to apply for the MPhil/PhD Philosophy in the usual way and receive and accept an offer of admission in order for the funding to be confirmed.
Your expression of interest must include:
- A statement outlining your proposed research topic (around 1500 words). An effective proposal will show awareness of the current state of the philosophical literature in the relevant area and will explain how your work will advance the literature.
- An explanation of how your project aligns with the mission of the Centre (around 300 words).
- Your CV.
- Confirmation that you understand that the scholarship is for study on the MPhil/PhD in Philosophy and that, if your proposal is selected, you will still need to apply for the MPhil/PhD in Philosophy in the usual way, meet all admission requirements, and receive and accept an offer of admission.
Submitting an expression of interest is free of charge.
