SPP Alumni Symposium 2025

The New Geoeconomics: Policy making in a Fragmented World

Friday 13 - Sunday 15 June 2025, London

Rising populist politics, polarised political discourse, an increase in misinformation on social media, a heightened risk of trade wars, the rising weight of geopolitical factors in domestic economic policy – these are just a few features of a world that is becoming increasingly fragmented and unstable. Is this the new normal? And if so, how can policymakers respond? Is there a hope for evidence-based policymaking in this brave new world?

The SPP’s annual Alumni Symposium will be examine some of these key issues with academic experts and our own SPP alumni community. We will also be holding professional development sessions, networking opportunities and social events: including an alumni-exclusive social on the Friday evening and a free activity on the Sunday.

We look forward to expanding our horizons with you; we really hope you'll be able to attend.

Where possible, certain sessions will be made hybrid for the benefit of our overseas alumni.

Registration is now open here

'The Economics of Power'

A session examining how economic thinking must adapt to weaponized trade relationships without abandoning market principles. Luis Garicano introduces the "national security externality" concept, showing how private actors fail to account for strategic resilience in their decisions. Garicano demonstrates that optimal interventions should target sectors where prices would spike during specific conflict scenarios, avoiding blanket protectionism. Using cases from semiconductor policy to energy dependencies, he offers a framework for building targeted resilience while preserving the efficiency gains of trade.
