Living with long COVID when nobody believes you are ill

LSE Research Showcase series
Shaw Library
Thursday 19 November 2026 3pm - 3.30pm

How can people make sense of confusing bodily symptoms and access appropriate healthcare when nobody seems to understand? Although the prevalence of long COVID symptoms is consistent across countries, knowledge of long COVID is concentrated in the Global North and tailored to privileged living conditions.

Drawing on collaborative, multi-method, patient-engaged research, Professor Flora Cornish and Brenda Sabaine Rodrigues discuss the lonely self-reliance of people with long COVID in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and the development of a community intervention to redistribute knowledge and resources.

Flora Cornish is Professor of Research Methodology in the Department of Methodology at LSE. She works with communities to understand and strengthen their responses to public health crises, using participatory and qualitative research methods. Brenda Sabaine Rodrigues is a PhD student in the Department of Methodology with expertise in the participation of socioeconomically vulnerable communities in addressing health and social inequities.
