The department welcomes applications from researchers who wishing to join us through an externally funded scheme. This applies to postdoctoral fellowships, visiting professorships and everything in between. A non-exhaustive list of relevant schemes is below.

The majority of our externally funded projects are hosted in the department’s research centre, the Centre for Philosophy of Natural and Social Sciences (CPNSS). Despite the centre’s name, we welcome proposals for research in all areas of philosophy.

If you have identified a scheme you would like to apply for and checked that you meet the eligibility criteria, you should contact a potential mentor/sponsor in the department with a short CV and draft proposal. This should be a member of the permanent faculty; LSE Fellows will not be able to sponsor applications. Please copy in the Director of CPNSS, Bryan Roberts.

We strongly recommend that you contact us as early as possible. There may be internal deadlines within the school which are considerably earlier than the funder’s advertised deadlines. In some cases, there will also be an internal selection process within the School.

Some schemes, like the Leverhulme Trust Early Career Research Fellowship, require the host institution to provide matching funding. The department is not always able to support applications to these schemes. In any year where we are able to support these applications, we will advertise a call for expressions of interest.

Some schemes, like the UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship, require the host institution to offer a permanent position at the end of the award. Unfortunately, the department is only able to support applications to these schemes from external applicants in very exceptional circumstances.
