Dr Hany Besada is a Visiting Senior Fellow at the Firoz Lalji Institute for Africa. He is currently serving as a Senior Advisor at Global Affairs Canada and Deputy Executive Director of the Global South-North Centre. He is also a Non-Executive Director at MAFCO Capital; Associate Professor at the Wits School of Governance, University of the Witwatersrand; Senior Research Fellow at the United Nations University–Institute for Natural Resources in Africa; Senior Fellow at the African Center for Economic Transformation; and Senior Fellow at the University of Toronto.
Dr Besada was Senior Advisor with Environment and Climate Change Canada. Prior to that, he served as Senior Research and Programme Advisor at the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation, United Nations Development Programme. He previously held several senior positions, including Senior Fellow at the China Institute for South-South Cooperation in Agriculture; Senior Fellow at the Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment, Columbia University; Deputy Executive Director at the Diamond Development Initiative; Research Professor at the Institute of African Studies, Carleton University; Senior Fellow at the Centre on Governance, University of Ottawa; Regional Advisor at the African Minerals Development Centre, United Nations Economic Commission for Africa; and Research Specialist at the United Nations Secretary-General’s High-Level Panel Secretariat on the Post-2015 Development Agenda.
Dr Besada is the author of more than 70 peer-reviewed scholarly articles, over 40 policy papers and reports, and more than 70 opinion pieces. He has also served as editor or contributing author of 16 books. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Warwick, United Kingdom.
