About
Mateus de Albuquerque is a Professor of Political Science at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora, Brazil and a Visiting Fellow at the International Inequalities Institute at LSE.
He obtained a PhD in Political Science from the Federal University of Paraná, Brazil. He is also a Coordinator of the Observatory of Political and Social Elites of Brazil, a research laboratory focused on analyzing the social profiles of Brazilian elites. His research interests focus on the relationship between the ruling classes and the State.
Research
Mateus has been developing two main research agendas: The analysis of the relationship between capitalism and the climate crisis through the penetration of interest agendas into institutional politics. This involves constructing an index to measure the degree of environmental damage caused by Brazilian parliamentary activity, and subsequently examining the ties between the lowest-scoring parliamentarians on this index and high-emission sectors of the economy. The analysis of the class character of State agents, beginning with an original prosopography of the 700 most prominent politicians in Brazil and their relationship with the ruling classes through educational, matrimonial, landownership, and corporate ties.
Engagement and impact
Mateus is a member of the INCT ReDem network, a multicentre research group that employs various political science approaches to analyse the democratic crisis in Brazil.
